Ben is an experienced researcher and robotics specialist, with nearly 30 years of knowledge in computational neuroscience and systems modelling, alongside extensive hands-on experience in robotics R&D, design and manufacturing, and wider project and personnel management.
Having spent his University years studying at Sheffield, Ben has received Bachelors, Masters, and PhD. Qualifications in Physics, Control Engineering and Non-Linear Systems respectively, and went on to spend 18 further years as a researcher across Sheffield and UWE Universities – the latter as a visiting researcher. Here, he studied the operation of the mammalian whisker system – from its mechanics, through transduction, to perception and behaviour using a broad range of techniques, ranging from behavioural studies, to numerical analysis, to computer and robotic modelling. Alongside this research, Ben worked as the group’s support engineer, with exposure to high-performance computing, big data systems, embedded systems, and electronic and mechanical engineering.
Overlapping with this, Ben gradually crossed into commercial robotics, where he led the engineering team at Consequential Robotics for the best part of 10 years to develop, amongst other products, the MIRO educational and research robot, and the MIROcloud SAAS educational platform. He is now returning with EnergyArk after a valuable break with his family and children.
